Future Leadership Model of Leadership

Leadership decisions are too often based on network, guesswork, or hard work. None of which necessarily delivers transformational leadership.

Our research

Our Model of Leadership takes a systemic view of a leader’s context, capability and capacity.

In an era defined by uncertainty, complexity, and rapid change, what constitutes transformational leadership, and how to assess and develop it, is front of mind for every executive.

High risk people decisions are made daily. The economy, workforce sustainability and indeed our future relies on robust decision making. Who is the best candidate for a role? Which employees show promise of succeeding in bigger roles to come? How do we develop leaders when the required skills and expectations of leadership are constantly evolving?

Too often, leadership decisions are based on network, guesswork, or hard work. None of which necessarily deliver transformational leadership.

The Model of Leadership underpins the selection, assessment and development of leaders; how we enable individual, team, and organisational performance for a sustainable future.

The Model of Leadership by Future Leadership™ takes a systems approach fit for today’s operating environment, positing three core components underpinned by evidence-based methodology:

  • Context – ‘the ask of leadership’ refers to the environmental factors in which leadership is to occur.
  • Capability – ‘the ability to perform’ represents the transferrable knowledge, non-technical skills, experiences and behaviours a leader has developed and that can be applied to future leadership requirements.
  • Capacity – ‘the likelihood to impact’ refers to the variables that are most likely to predict a leader’s future impact. It refers to the potential to adapt, grow and evolve in order to realise breakthrough performance.

The work of leadership is multi-faceted, requiring leaders to expertly understand the situation, leverage their skills and capabilities and respond with agility and foresight. We invite you to consider the Model of Leadership as a powerful lens through which to shape your leadership decisions, so that together, we can identify and develop leaders equipped to solve tomorrow’s problems, today.

An Integrated Framework

Integrating Context, Capability, and Capacity for Better Decisions.

The Model of Leadership by Future Leadership™ has numerous applications.

Common language for leadership capability: Our articulation and measurement of context, capability, provides a holistic common language of all the elements that must be considered, and stacked onto each other, for leadership decision-making.

Context analysis: Elements of context can be clearly and succinctly analysed to ensure leaders are set up for success. Honing in on context forms a key part of any diagnostic before capability, culture and learning interventions

Leadership selection: Derisks decision making as more confident decisions can be achieved, given the extensive number of data points measured as part of any methodology. Rest assured, this does not mean an unnecessarily protracted process as we prioritise efficient yet comprehensive measurement.

Succession planning and talent management: The Model of Leadership represents our point of view on what predicts effective leadership so that clients can assess against the model and therefore make confident decisions when promoting leaders. The approach also enables benchmarking over time as leaders are assessed against the same criteria; however, client customisation is possible.

Team composition and development: Aligning individuals’ capabilities and capacities to the strategic goals and context of a project or business unit.

Strategic planning: Using the three dimensions of context, capability and capacity, we guide scenario planning. Evaluate the external environment (context), the organisational skill sets and experiences(capability), and leaders’ or teams’ ability to handle complexity (capacity).

Leadership coaching, learning and development: Targeting capacity-building interventions (e.g. stretch assignments, cross-functional projects) to elevate thinking maturity and learning agility.

We leverage the Model of Leadership as an evidence-based structure and language for a new type of conversation when identifying, developing and transforming talent in your organisation. A pragmatic roadmap for implementation is critical for fostering a culture of leadership capability attuned to the future. The integration of a shared language of leadership within organisations cultivates behaviours in leaders who are not only skilled in their current roles but also prepared for the evolving demands of tomorrow.

The leadership capabilities of tomorrow are uniquely human.

Once upon a time, organisations relied on a fixed set of competencies. Today, leaders adapt to new challenges almost constantly. Through the lens of our Model of Leadership, we prepare boards and executives for the future.
