
Conducting an Executive Search to appoint an exceptional head of department to lead the Mathematics Team
The Brief
Future Leadership™ was engaged by an independent school to appoint their next Head of Mathematics.
Reporting to the Head of Secondary, the Head of Mathematics is primarily responsible for the strategic leadership of the mathematics programs from Prep to Year 12. The department includes approximately seven full-time permanent staff and four part-time staff who also teach in other faculties. The Head of Mathematics works closely with other Heads of Faculty and the School Leadership Team to create and manage an innovative and comprehensive Mathematics program. Responsibilities include overseeing the development of teaching and learning programs, supporting professional development, and maintaining and growing a high-performing team.
The Process
Future Leadership™, represented by Liam King undertook a comprehensive search process tailored to the organisation’s needs.
Key steps included:
- Briefing and Strategy Development: Liam King undertook a series of briefings with senior leadership, including the Principal, Director, and Head of Secondary, to ensure the full details of the position and its requirements were understood and incorporated into the search strategy. Utilising established networks of qualified individuals and referral partners, the executive search firm sought to identify a candidate with experience in curriculum administration, including budget development and management, and a strong track record in Mathematics and/or teaching at a high level.
- Targeted Candidate Search: To support the school’s stated outcomes, the search focused on candidates with an understanding of the independent school sector and a demonstrated ability to identify and leverage opportunities to deliver results. The school was presented with a comprehensive long list of six candidates, of whom four were invited to panel interviews.
- Candidate Assessment: Future Leadership™ presented a strong list of candidates to the School Leadership Team with five candidates progressing to panel interviews.
- Final Evaluation: Two rounds of panel interviews were conducted with the final two candidates preparing a presentation to introduce themselves and discuss the first pilar of the Schools Strategic Plan.
The Outcome
The Selection Panel were extremely pleased with the candidate field, determining the appointment of an experienced and passionate teacher who has worked across the education sector for several years, most recently in the position of Curriculum Leader – Mathematics.
