The Brief

Future Leadership™ was engaged by a regional health service in Victoria to appoint a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to lead its large medical services division.
The organisation, one of the largest employers in Gippsland, provides care to over 260,000 people and offers a broad range of services including emergency care, aged care, mental health, oncology, and rehabilitation.
The strategic environment required a leader with strong medical administration experience, ideally a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA), and someone aligned with the organisation’s values and capable of managing sensitive conversations.

The Process

Future Leadership™ undertook a comprehensive search process tailored to the organisation’s needs.
Key steps included:
• Briefing and Strategy Development: Engaged with the CEO to define the ideal candidate profile, focusing on medical administration experience and cultural alignment.
• Targeted Candidate Search: Leveraged extensive health sector networks across Australia and New Zealand, and conducted a digital advertising campaign including the RACMA newsletter.
• Candidate Assessment: Engaged in dialogue with sector leaders to identify and encourage high-potential candidates.
• Final Evaluation: Coordinated logistics for in-person interviews across multiple jurisdictions.

The Outcome

The process resulted in a successful appointment a Chief Medical Officer in September 2022. A Fellow of RACMA, brought extensive executive experience across tertiary, quaternary, urban, regional, and rural health services. The appointees expertise in medical leadership, postgraduate education, and health informatics was recognised as a strong fit for the organisation’s strategic needs.
