ABS LABOUR FORCE FIGURES

The Brief

Future Leadership was engaged by a national trade and investment agency we had previously worked with on multiple occasions to this time appoint a General Manager, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), a critical senior executive role responsible for advancing Australia’s commercial, diplomatic and strategic interests across one of the agency’s most complex and diverse international regions. The appointment followed a review of the organisation’s global operating model, with an increased focus on sharpening regional leadership capability, strengthening whole‑of‑government alignment and enhancing the impact of international trade, investment and industry development programs.

Operating within a large global network, the organisation supports Australian businesses to expand internationally, attracts high‑value foreign investment and promotes Australia’s economic, tourism and education strengths abroad. The EMEA region represents a uniquely challenging and strategically important portfolio, requiring a leader capable of navigating varied geopolitical climates, mature and emerging markets and a wide mix of cultural, regulatory and commercial environments.

The General Manager role provides leadership across Australian and locally engaged teams based throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Key priorities included delivering targeted trade facilitation, driving investment attraction outcomes, strengthening relationships with business and government stakeholders and contributing strategic advice to national economic, trade and diplomatic objectives. The position also requires representing Australia in high‑level international settings and building partnerships across governments, industries and global institutions.

This appointment sought a highly experienced executive with deep international exposure, strong commercial acumen, policy literacy and the capability to lead culturally diverse, geographically dispersed teams. The ability to influence, collaborate and drive measurable commercial outcomes was central to success in the role.
