The Position
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) occupies a key leadership role in the international development sector, providing insightful commentary on key government policy and influencing significant sector change and reform. ACFID’s vision is of a world where all people are free from extreme poverty, injustice and inequality, and where the earth’s finite resources are managed sustainably. Its purpose is to lead and unite members in action for a just, equitable and sustainable world.
The Board of ACFID is seeking to appoint a new CEO commencing in 2025, to replace long serving CEO Marc Purcell. Reporting through the President to the Council Board, the CEO will partner with the Board in designing and implementing its vision and future focussed strategic plan and will lead the Council into its next phase of impact through a unifying presence. The CEO position carries overall management responsibility for all operational matters associated with ACFID’s work.
Maintaining a strong public profile, the CEO role will drive a high-level program of advocacy, sector development, promotion and support activities on behalf of member organisations. Critical to success will be a strong alignment to mission and reputation for activism, thought leadership and lobbying change.
This is a unique opportunity to exercise strategic acumen and a unifying presence to ensure that ACFID remains a strong independent voice for effective and compassionate global engagement.
ACFID has a preference for the CEO to reside in Canberra but would not rule out a candidate from elsewhere. Relocation expenses would be paid for the successful candidate if needed.
ACFID is a Public Benevolent Institution (PBI) and has salary packaging which allows employees to use a proportion of the salary using tax-free dollars.

Founded in 1965, ACFID currently has 127 members and 20 affiliates operating in more than 85 developing countries.
ACFID’s members range from large Australian multisectoral organisations that are linked to international federations of NGOs, agencies with specialised thematic expertise, and smaller community-based groups, with a mix of secular and faith-based organisations.
In 2021–22, the total revenue raised by ACFID’s members amounted to $1.893 billion, $773 million of which was raised by 1,149,619 individual donors.
