The Position

The Heart Foundation seeks to appoint a highly credible medical professional, with expertise directly relevant to cardiovascular health, to the role of Chief Scientific and Medical Officer (CSMO), with the transition to other responsibilities within the Heart Foundation of Professor Garry Jennings. The CSMO will provide clinically up‑to‑date, research‑informed, independent advice to the Board, Board Committees and Senior Leadership in reference to the Foundation’s strategy, prevention initiatives, public health programs and research portfolio. A central focus is ensuring decision‑making is guided by robust clinical evidence and contemporary cardiovascular practice.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, and attending Board meetings in an ex officio capacity, the CSMO will coordinate and synthesise input from designated Specialist Medical Advisors to deliver cohesive advice across all areas of the Foundation’s work. Acting as a principal media spokesperson on medical and technical issues, the CSMO will collaborate with senior staff to shape authoritative content and timely public commentary aligned with the Foundation’s strategy. The role will build and sustain strategic relationships with external health groups, alliances and partners, including national and international heart foundations/associations, cardiology societies and related bodies, representing the Heart Foundation as a nominated delegate where required, including with media. The CSMO will assist with, and at times lead, representations to State and Federal Governments within the Foundation’s national advocacy program.

As a respected clinical leader, with a deep commitment to the Heart Foundation’s vision, mission and values, the successful incumbent will bring substantial experience from across public health, cardiovascular medicine and research (basic, clinical and/or population health), underpinned by a rigorous understanding of relevant epidemiology, population needs and prevention strategies. The incumbent will have a demonstrated ability to translate complex research into clear insights for both professional and lay audiences and demonstrate strategic leadership, influence and high‑level communication skills, including confident media engagement. It will be a requirement to hold medical/specialist qualifications , with eligibility for fellowship of a specialist college with relevance to cardiovascular health.
