The Dean of the Faculty of Environment, Society & Design (ESD) | Te Wāhaka ki Te Taiao te Hāpori Whānui me kā Mahi Hoahoa has the primary general management responsibility and formal accountability for determining the strategy of the Faculty and ensuring its operational effectiveness and efficiency in a manner consistent with the current Business Plan and Strategic Intent of Lincoln University.

The Dean will be the steward of excellence in teaching, research and service who ensures the Faculty works as an effective and synergistic team while complementing the deliveries and activities of the other University faculties.

  • This role is for an inspirational leader to provide strategic direction and deliver high-quality education, research and development aligned to the LU Strategic Goals
  • The successful candidate will be in charge of the financial, physical and staffing resources within the faculty as well as supporting and promoting the wellbeing of staff and fostering a culture characterised by integrity and respect
  • They will develop and maintain relationships with targeted industry organisations, community stakeholders, iwi and other external agencies as well as provide academic leadership, nurturing and guidance to encourage all academic staff to strive to seek high standards in their research and teaching.

This position is based in The Faculty of Environment, Society and Design (ESD), located on Te Waihora Campus. The position supports the Lincoln University strategy of being New Zealand’s specialist, land- based university, through its portfolio of programmes and research. As a specialised land-based institution the University takes a broad view of land whereby collectively we contribute to advancements in agriculture, agribusiness, conservation and environmental management, tourism and recreation.

The Faculty of Environment, Society and Design focuses on the human dimensions of whenua across all these key sectors, and explicitly conservation, environment, tourism and recreation. Drawing across a unique range of fields of study, including but not limited to Environmental Management, Landscape Architecture, Water, Tourism, Sport, and Applied Computing, ESD focuses on the relationship between people and place to achieve sustainable development. Specifically, we have expertise in how engagement with land is managed, governed, planned, modelled, visualised or designed. The Faculty is home to the Department of Environmental Management, Department of Tourism, Sport and Society, School of Landscape Architecture, and the Joint Centre for Waterways.  With a workforce including 60+ academic staff and 5 professional staff, the Faculty achieves its goals through the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes research and effective engagement with iwi and relevant sector and professional organisations.
