The Brief

Future Leadership was approached by this schools organisation to partner in the search and appointment process for two new board directors.

With 8,000 students and 1,000 staff spread across 7 different campuses, this schools organisation has existed for decades but with a new governance structure. Previously there was a national Board which changed to become a state based Board. With this change, the new Board was focussed on developing and strengthening the organisations structures, policies and budgets. In view of this, the new Directors were required to have excellent governance experience. In addition, the Board were considering big strategic matters, such as campus developments and redevelopments, and sought legal and/or financial expertise.

The Process

Future Leadership™ assembled a specialised team, led by Deborah Komesaroff and Liam King and an experienced  administration team, to lead the search. The consultant team leveraged existing research and talent pools while conducting further search to find candidates who met our clients specific needs. The team reached out to governance experts across multiple industries, ensuring a diverse range of highly qualified candidates were considered. Key steps included:

  • Targeted Search and Talent Identification: At the outset, a comprehensive briefing was provided by the Board Chair and the Director and CEO or the school organisation, where the nuances and the requirements for the Board Director roles were discussed in detail. The Future Leadership team then embarked on a rigorous search process to identify candidates who not only possessed the essential expertise but also aligned with the values and vision of the organisation.
  • Comprehensive Shortlisting: There was a high  level of interest, with expressions of interest possessing a host of experience. Future Leadership was able to provide our client with a strong and diverse list of 8 potential candidates from relevant sectors.
  • Panel Interviews and Reference Checking: Following shortlisting, four viable candidates progressed to panel interviews with the organisations Chief Executive Officer, board chair and other board members. Future Leadership coordinated all aspects of the panel interviews, including logistics and interview questions. 360 degree reference checking was completed for the preferred candidates, along with completion of qualification and required probity checks

The Outcome

Two exceptional candidates were appointed as Directors for this organisation. One being a seasoned Lawyer and Company Secretary who brings a broad range of skills and experience in governance, risk and compliance, and corporate law. The second, since retiring from a thirty-year career at a well known Bank in 2015, had since selectively pursued governance roles that align with their interests and values.

These new Board Directors are poised to enhance the school organisations governance structures, support the organisation’s response to workforce challenges, and contribute to the financial sustainability and future developments of its campuses.
