Delivering an Executive Search to Strengthen Junior School Leadership for an Independent Girls’ School in Victoria

The Brief

Future Leadership™ was engaged by a leading independent girls’ school in Melbourne to appoint a Head of Junior School at a critical point in the school’s strategic journey. The appointment was central to strengthening leadership across Early Years to Year 6 and ensuring the Junior School continued to deliver exceptional academic, pastoral and cocurricular outcomes aligned to the school’s values and future direction.

The role required a contemporary educational leader with deep expertise in curriculum and pedagogy, a strong commitment to student wellbeing and child safety, and the capacity to contribute meaningfully to whole school strategy. As the school prepared to develop its next strategic plan, the Head of Junior School was expected to bring fresh thinking, lead evidence based improvement and foster strong connections with families, staff and the broader community.

The search focused on identifying a leader capable of balancing operational excellence with visionary leadership, and of building a collaborative, high performing Junior School culture. Particular emphasis was placed on experience across Early Learning and Primary settings, data informed decision making, and the ability to inspire staff while maintaining a visible, values driven presence within the school community.

The Process

Future Leadership™ undertook a comprehensive national executive search tailored to the school’s context and leadership requirements.

  • Briefing and Strategy Development
A detailed briefing was conducted with the Principal to clarify the strategic priorities, leadership challenges and success profile for the role. These insights informed the final position description and search strategy. It was crucial that a qualified appointment was made as soon as possible so the timeline for the search was developed to produce a swift outcome.
  • Targeted Candidate Search
A national search across Australia and New Zealand was undertaken, drawing on Future Leadership’s education networks, proprietary database, and trusted referral partners and to identify highcalibre candidates from comparable independent and faithbased school environments.
  • Candidate Assessment
Candidates were assessed through structured interviews aligned to the Future Leadership Capability Framework, with a focus on educational leadership, strategic thinking, wellbeing leadership and stakeholder engagement.
  • Shortlisting and Panel Interviews
A detailed shortlist report was prepared and discussed with the school, followed by clientled panel interviews supported by Future Leadership, including the provision of panel interview questions and the presence of the Future Leadership consultant for first round interviews.
  • Final Evaluation and Appointment
Preferred candidates progressed through final interviews, comprehensive reference checking and appointment negotiations to secure the successful candidate.

The Outcome

The process resulted in the appointment of an experience educational leader with extensive experience across Early Years and Primary education in both Australian and international school contexts. The successful candidate brings a strong track record in leading teaching and learning, curriculum design and whole school improvement, with particular expertise in data informed practice and contemporary pedagogical frameworks.

The appointees background includes senior leadership roles within multicampus schools, experience as a primary school principal, and deep engagement with internationally recognised curriculum programs.
