In preparation for its 120-year anniversary, a Catholic Girls’ College in Townsville engaged Future Leadership to conduct an executive search for a new Principal. The process identified a proven leader with extensive experience and a strong commitment to all-girls education, aligned with the College’s values and strategic direction.

The Brief

A Catholic Girls’ College in Townsville, preparing to celebrate its 120-year anniversary in 2025, engaged Future Leadership to support the appointment of a new Principal. The College sought a passionate, capable, and inspiring leader to strengthen its dynamic and positive culture. Reporting to the College Board, the Principal will continue to enhance the College’s reputation as a leading school for young women in North Queensland. Leading a skilled and committed teaching team, the Principal will champion innovation and evidence-based education to foster an inclusive and empowering learning environment designed for girls.

The Process

The Future Leadership team, led by Liz Jones, began the process with an initial briefing with the Selection Committee via MS Teams, followed by a site visit to the College. During the visit, Liz engaged with a wide range of stakeholders, including the Board Chair, current Principal, Leadership Team, students, and parents. The search strategy focused on identifying candidates with deep educational expertise, a capacity to build strategic partnerships, strong commercial acumen, and experience in improving financial sustainability. Future Leadership activated its national networks of referral partners and known candidates, supported by targeted advertising in The Australian to broaden the reach. A detailed shortlist report, including psychometric assessment results, was provided to the Selection Committee. All shortlisted candidates were required to receive approval from Mercy Partners, with Future Leadership supporting this process. The first-round interviews were conducted via MS Teams, with the preferred candidate participating in a second-round onsite visit that included a presentation, meetings with key stakeholders, and a school tour. Comprehensive 360-degree reference checks and probity clearances were completed prior to final appointment.

The Outcome

The successful appointment commenced in April 2025. With over ten years of experience in middle and senior leadership within Independent schools, the appointee was recognised as a collaborative and innovative educator. Their passion for all-girls education aligned closely with the College’s mission, and they brought a deep familiarity with the Mercy Values and traditions that underpin the school community.
