Conducting an executive search for two new board directors to act as critical conduits in driving growth and success

The Brief
Future Leadership was approached by this customer-owned bank to partner in the search and appointment process for two new board directors to act as critical conduits in driving the organisations growth and success.
With the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) implementing positive cultural change and more efficient operations while the organisation progresses through a period of transformation, the incoming board members were to possess a good level of experience with particular capability in health, digital technology, banking, law and business strategy. The successful Board Members would be aligned with the organisations culture of cooperation and collaboration, with a propensity for strategic foresight, savviness and commerciality.

The Process
Future Leadership™ assembled a specialised team, led by David Baber, and an experienced research and administration team, to lead the search. Key steps included:
- Targeted Search and Talent Identification: An initial briefing with representatives of the organisation. This board search assignment was targeted in Victoria supported by digital advertising on AICD, Women on Boards and on the Future Leadership opportunities page. Future Leadership reached out to known individuals in our referral network, speaking with potential candidates to garner their interest and gain further recommendations. Paramount to a Board appointment was the requirement to have a passionate commitment to the core values of the organisation and its future ambitions as it embarked upon a journey of transformation and continued customer service excellence. Areas of experience and capabilities of particular interest were health, digital technology, banking, law and business strategy, with an AICD qualification or equivalent, or a commitment to complete. The individuals appointed were to bring a reputation for strategic foresight, collaboration and the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
- Comprehensive Shortlisting: There was a high level of interest, with over 159 expressions of interest received. Possessing a host of experience recruiting board members for an array of organisations, Future Leadership was able to provide our client with a strong and diverse list of 13 potential candidates from relevant sectors, such as banking, finance, government, education, not-for-profit, health and community services, sport and corporate.
- Panel Interviews and Reference Checking: Following shortlisting, four viable candidates progressed to first round panel interviews with the organisations board chair, deputy chair and directors. Future Leadership coordinated all aspects of the panel interviews, including logistics and interview questions, with the lead consultant supporting the selection panel on the day. 360 degree reference checking was completed for the preferred candidates, along with completion of qualification and required probity checks
The Outcome
The successful appointees were confirmed with the first successful candidate placed as a board director presenting with a commitment to fostering sound corporate governance, financial and risk management counsel that is consistent with the organisations values. The successful appointee also had an extensive history of board appointments particularly within health and human services.
The second successful candidate placed brought experience and commitment to the customer owned banking sector and its values.
