The Brief

Having completed the search and placement of the Chief Executive Officer for a regional health service in 2017, followed by the Chief Financial Officer in 2022, the organisation engaged with Future Leadership once again in 2023 to partner on the Chief Executive Officer position to replace the outgoing CEO.

The Board was looking to appoint a CEO who could take the organisation to the next level and support the growing Executive Team. The ideal candidate was to be an inspirational and inclusive CEO who could manage professional relationships and boundaries while being deeply involved in the community. It was vital that the appointee be a CEO who could establish themselves as a leader in healthcare management across the region, working closely with regional partners and building on the collaborative relationships that had been established, for the benefit of all.

The Process

Following two comprehensive briefing meetings with the selection committee, the Future Leadership team undertook a national search targeting individuals with a deep knowledge and understanding of clinical governance systems in a complex environment.

The Board sought to appoint a professional who would demonstrate exceptional stakeholder engagement, possess well-defined analytical and commercial skills in management and service delivery, coupled with the ability to work in a complex and community-focused environment. The incoming CEO would have the ability to influence and demonstrate a commitment to excellence, resulting in better health outcomes for the community. Future Leadership presented a longlist of six individuals, with four progressing through to the first-round panel interview. With such a high calibre of candidates, the selection committee chose to take all four through to a second-round panel interview. Following those interviews, three candidates were progressed to a third interview where they were asked to prepare and deliver a presentation.

Additionally, the appointee’s ability to work with stakeholders such as universities and regional centres to improve outcomes for patients, along with a commitment to patient advocacy, were key factors in the decision.
