The Brief

Future Leadership™ was engaged by a leading independent school in Victoria to appoint a Chief Commercial Officer aimed at strengthening commercial, financial and non‑educational operations. The position plays a pivotal role in enabling academic excellence, student wellbeing and community engagement. Reporting directly to the Principal and forming part of the Senior Leadership Team, the role oversees financial management, ICT strategy, marketing and communications, admissions, operations and governance through the Company Secretary function.

The school was entering a period of significant strategic development, including major capital works planning, expansion of international programs, uplift of ICT capability and evolving expectations around enrolment growth and brand positioning. These organisational priorities required a contemporary and collaborative commercial leader with the capability to enhance operational efficiency, manage complex risk environments and ensure alignment with long‑term strategic goals.

A comprehensive briefing with key stakeholders identified the need for an appointed with strong financial leadership experience, a track record of delivering strategic initiatives and the ability to build trusted relationships across a diverse school community. A comprehensive search across Australia and New Zealand, supported by online advertising and targeted outreach, was initiated to identify leaders with both the expertise and cultural fit to guide the school through its next strategic phase.

  • Briefing and Strategy Development
    Engagement with the Principal and senior stakeholders to define priorities, understand role expectations and clarify the strategic challenges associated with finance, capital works, ICT uplift and organisational operations.

  • Final Evaluation
    Shortlisted candidates participated in interviews, capability assessment and final evaluation processes, with outcomes assessed against the role’s strategic objectives and cultural requirements.

The Outcome

The search process resulted in the appointment of a seasoned commercial leader with extensive experience in financial oversight, operational management and strategic planning across large, complex service‑based environments. The appointed Chief Commercial Officer demonstrated capability in delivering major capital works, enhancing financial governance structures and leading multifaceted operational portfolios, all of which aligned to the school’s strategic ambitions.
