Emergency Management Commissioner for Crime Assistance Public Sector Organisation

The Brief

Future Leadership™ was engaged by a public sector body, to partner in the appointment of the next Commissioner, following the announcement of the retirement of a long serving and successful incumbent.  

The Emergency Management Commissioner (EMC) provides leadership for emergency management, including driving improvements, particularly for operational capability and interoperability

A proven resilient leader, accomplished in both strategy and operations was sought to provide the coordinating lead on complex emergency incidents and ensure operational standards are upheld by responder agencies. The appointee was required to drive collaboration in the emergency management sector to the capacity of communities to plan for, withstand, respond to and recover from emergencies.

The Process

Future Leadership™ undertook this executive search process targeting high calibre and proven leaders nationally and in New Zealand. Sourcing occurred across the whole range of emergency service and relevant community organisations

The search process and engagement was led by David Baber, who had undertaken previous senior leadership assignments in the emergency services sectors.

The candidate profile required someone who had built a strong reputation serving community, and understood the timing for assertive, upfront leadership as well as the timing for collaboration and consultation. Resilience and foresight were critical attribute given the role has responsibility for coordination before, during and after major emergencies, including the management of consequences of an emergency.

A highly credible shortlist of values driven candidates was presented to the expert recruitment panel.  Panel interviews focussed on how the candidates would work with key internal and external stakeholders, and their approach to building and maintaining a strong relationship with the sector and community, across Victoria as well as showing national leadership in their filed.

Experienced at Commissioner level in organisational and operational policing. His long career saw him succeed in metropolitan and regional environments, bringing a pragmatic and collaborative approach to serving community.
