The Brief

A leading independent school sought assistance to appoint an inspirational leader as the Head of its campus following the retirement of the previous Head after forty years of service.

The campus, with approximately 1,300 students across Junior, Middle, and Senior Schools, also houses a residential facility. The school needed a Head of Campus with strong influencing skills, the ability to build a cohesive sense of community, and the capability to make a visible difference. An internal candidate of high standing was flagged as a potential contender during the briefing process.

The Process

The search process was led by an experienced consultant, supported by a dedicated Research Associate.

Previous successful searches for the school had imparted a deep understanding of its culture and key needs, providing an excellent foundation for targeting prospective candidates within established networks. The search was supported by both print and online advertising, which also served to publicly acknowledge the outgoing Head. The process involved careful and respectful management of the internal candidate’s consideration, ensuring consistency in the assessment process across all candidates. The school interviewed four external and one internal candidate in the first round of panel interviews, with a second round conducted with one external and the internal candidate. The final two candidates were asked to present their first address as Head of Campus and share their views on the future of education.
