Public Sector Leadership

The Brief

Future Leadership™ was engaged by a regional public health service in Victoria to support the urgent appointment of an Interim Executive Director of Nursing during a critical leadership transition.
The organisation required an experienced health executive who could rapidly establish credibility with nursing, clinical and operational teams, provide visible leadership across wards and services, and maintain a strong focus on safe patient flow, workforce coverage, clinical governance, quality standards and continuity of care within a regional health context.

The Process

Future Leadership™ undertook a targeted interim executive process tailored to the organisation’s immediate operational and clinical priorities.

Key steps included:
Briefing and Strategy Development: Worked closely with executive stakeholders to clarify the scope of the interim role, critical risks and short‑term priorities across nursing and clinical services.
Targeted Candidate Search: Identified proven nursing and health executives with relevant public sector, regional health and executive leadership experience who were available at short notice.
Candidate Assessment: Presented three high calibre interim candidates with demonstrated capability across complex healthcare environments.
Final Evaluation: Supported a focused interview and assessment process, leading to the appointment of an interim executive whose experience closely aligned to the organisation’s immediate needs.

The Outcome

The process resulted in the appointment of a highly experienced interim Executive Director of Nursing who provided calm, visible and credible leadership across the nursing and clinical services portfolio.
The interim executive’s collaborative approach, sound operational judgement and ability to work closely with frontline leaders supported clinical safety, workforce stability, patient flow and day‑to‑day service continuity. This enabled the organisation to maintain momentum, strengthen confidence with key internal and external stakeholders, and continue progressing priority service delivery requirements throughout the interim period.
