Dr. Irene Kourtis has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases (ASID), officially beginning her role on 9 September 2024. In this capacity, she will work to further strengthen ASID’s role as the peak professional body for infectious diseases and clinical microbiology across Australasia. By collaborating closely with members, Irene is committed to advancing ASID’s mission in research, education, and advocacy.

Irene’s career in infectious diseases began with a major in microbiology, followed by a PhD in Virology (RSV) from the Burnet Institute. She is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and holds a Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law. Irene’s professional journey started at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory, and she has since built her career in sectors dedicated to advancing health outcomes through innovation, advocacy, and service delivery. She brings extensive expertise as a senior executive within the life sciences, membership organisations, and health sectors.

Irene has held executive roles, including CEO of the Australian Genome Research Facility, Neuroscience Trials Australia and Chief Operating Officer at the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering. Her board experience spans several membership-based organisations, such as the Forensic and Clinical Toxicology Association and BioMelbourne Network.
