Prof The Hon Michael Lavarch AO appointed as Board President at Community Broadcasting Foundation

Michael Lavarch commenced in the role in late 2025. He brings a distinguished record of governance leadership, public policy expertise, and advocacy for grassroots communities, with a career spanning senior roles in government, regulation, academia, and media. His experience as a former Commonwealth Attorney-General, Chair of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman, and director of a film production company focused on social justice and First Nations storytelling, uniquely positions him to lead CBF into its next chapter.

As President, Michael Lavarch will provide strategic direction and sector leadership, building on CBF’s proud tradition of supporting over 450 community broadcasting services across Australia. His commitment to diversity, social justice, and advancing underrepresented voices aligns with CBF’s mission to strengthen community media and foster resilient, inclusive organisations. With extensive board and regulatory leadership experience, including roles in national ombudsman schemes, education, and First Nations treaty processes, he is deeply committed to supporting diverse communities and enhancing the impact of community broadcasting.

With Michael Lavarch’s leadership, CBF will continue to champion Australia’s largest independent media sector, distributing more than $20 million annually to connect and empower communities nationwide. Working together to build a thriving, impactful, and resilient future for community media.
