- Provide independent, evidence-based advice to government on higher education and VET policy, funding, and coordination, while championing integrity, equity, and excellence across the sector.
- Collaborate with stakeholders and drive system-wide improvement, including through mission-based compacts, research, and consultation—building a fairer and more effective tertiary education system for all Australians.
The Organisation
The Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC) will be a new statutory body tasked with delivering a better and fairer tertiary education system that meets national economic and social objectives.
ATEC will operate independently, providing expert advice and oversight across higher education and vocational education and training (VET). Commissioners will work collaboratively to build a high-impact institution that drives lasting improvement across the system.
The Position
The Australian Government is seeking outstanding leaders to serve as inaugural Commissioners of the Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC) — a new independent steward for the tertiary education system.
These statutory appointments will be made by the Commonwealth Minister for Education, subject to the passage of the proposed Universities Accord (ATEC) Act. The roles offer a unique opportunity to shape the future of higher education and VET in Australia.

Key Responsibilities:
- Provide independent advice to government on tertiary education policy and coordination
- Oversee mission-based compacts with higher education providers
- Lead research and stakeholder engagement across the sector
- Champion equity, integrity, and excellence in tertiary education
- The Chief Commissioner will lead strategic vision and stakeholder engagement.
- The First Nations Commissioner must be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and will promote Indigenous perspectives and success in tertiary education.
Appointments will be for up to 5 years, with remuneration determined by the Remuneration Tribunal (subject to legislation). Security clearance and Australian citizenship are required.
