Female applicants who could lead and manage change in a complex organisation were to be encourage in this male-dominated field.

Detailed research and mapping covered high calibre potential candidates with experience in research organisations, higher education, the public sector, defence related consultancies and partner organisations internationally. Our team reached out to individuals across these networks, engaging in dialogue to ascertain advice and recommendations of potential candidates, who were then encouraged to apply and were interviewed by Future Leadership consultants to evaluate their fit with the culture and requirements of our client. To further encourage strong potential female candidates, additional contact and dialogue was made, offering a confidential discussion where appropriate.

The successful appointee would be expected to make critical contributions to the development of government programs and policy through the provision of expert scientific advice and engage with clients and work collaboratively with the Chiefs of Division. It was also identified the incumbent would be able to influence, negotiate and engender enthusiasm in others, would have astute judgement, political awareness and an inclusive leadership style, taking a proactive approach to professional and organisational development. Outstanding interpersonal and representational skills were also key to building strong relationships with clients and national and international science partners.
