The Position
Independent Schools NSW is seeking an experienced School Counsellor to join its Student Services portfolio as an Education Consultant, providing expert advice on student mental health, wellbeing and inclusive education across the independent school sector.
Reporting to the Manager, Mental Health and Wellbeing, this senior advisory role operates within a centralised advisory model. The Education Consultant responds to complex and high‑risk matters raised by schools, providing professional judgement, guidance and written recommendations to school leaders.
The role involves partnering with principals and executive teams across NSW, supporting them to navigate sensitive and often high‑stakes issues, while building sector capability through professional learning, school visits and system‑level advice.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert advice to schools on complex mental health, wellbeing and critical incident matters
- Clearly articulate options, risks and implications to school leaders, supporting informed decision‑making
- Build trusted relationships with principals and senior leaders across the independent school sector
- Design and deliver high‑quality professional learning for diverse audiences
- Contribute to sector‑wide strategic initiatives and projects within Student Services
- Operate confidently in an on‑call, responsive advisory environment
About You
You will be a senior, credible practitioner with strong psychological expertise and experience working within or alongside school environments. You bring the judgement, gravitas and communication skills required to advise leaders on sensitive and complex matters and a willingness to travel throughout NSW. The successful candidate will demonstrate the following capabilities:
- Registration as a Clinical Psychologist, Psychologist, or qualification as a Social Worker is essential
- Significant experience in school‑based or education system settings
- Demonstrated ability to operate beyond direct service delivery, influencing and advising senior leaders
- Confidence presenting options and managing risk in complex situations
- Strong relationship‑building skills and professional presence
- Capacity to travel regularly across New South Wales
