Future Leadership Capability Framework

Amidst rapid skills adoption, organisational focus should be on the human capabilities that underpin our ability to rapidly adopt skills.

Our research

Our long-standing relationships with Australian executives demonstrate Future Capability can feel elusive

The Future Leadership Capability Framework is built on 25 years of international research, grounded in Human Capability Standards, and underpinned by Hogan psychometrics. We overlay extensive leadership experience to align capabilities with organisational needs, preparing boards and executives for the future. The model defines essential skills, knowledge, behaviours, attributes, and mindsets necessary for high-potential individuals to thrive in a rapidly changing work environment. This framework provides a common language for leadership development and integrating these capabilities into organisational culture.

Our research shows key future capabilities include adaptability, direction and enterprise leadership, innovation, initiative, communication, and critical thinking.

Yet, many organisations are still maturing in talent retention, building economic adaptability, fundamental leadership training, mental health, workforce transformation, and change management, meaning that capability development for future requirements is still aspirational.

The urgency to cultivate these capabilities, especially among emerging leaders, cannot be overstated.

Future Capabilities

Capabilities are non-binary and as such, have competency levels within them.

Capabilities address both performance (to date) and potential (for development) by taking a tiered approach to different roles and operating environments. The Future Leadership Capability Framework extends its tiered scale from Managers, all the way to Board Director, creating a common language of leadership throughout the organisation.

We leverage the Future Leadership Capability Framework as an evidence-based structure and language for a new type of conversation when identifying, developing and transforming talent in your organisation. A pragmatic roadmap for implementation is critical for fostering a culture of leadership capability attuned to the future. The integration of a shared language of leadership within organisations cultivates behaviours in leaders who are not only skilled in their current roles but also prepared for the evolving demands of tomorrow.

Dimensions

The framework draws on four key dimensions of Future Leadership Capability.

Leaders are increasingly looking to attract and elevate talent who not only have a future-focused mindset but also excel in interpersonal relations and leadership.

The leadership capabilities of tomorrow are uniquely human.

Once upon a time, organisations relied on a fixed set of competencies. Today, leaders adapt to new challenges almost constantly. Through the lens of our Future Leadership Capability Framework, we prepare boards and executives for the future.
