The Brief

Future Leadership held an existing relationship with a regional health service after appointing the Executive General Manager, People & Culture, in mid-2021. With the announced resignation of the CEO, the health service once again chose to partner with Future Leadership for this critical appointment.

Reporting to the Minister for Health and Minister for Mental Health, the CEO will lead and champion the transformational agenda currently underway within the health service to deliver exceptional and innovative health outcomes to the community, setting new standards and models of healthcare in Australia. This was a unique opportunity for a senior leader to work closely with all levels of government, including Ministers, senior regional government and Commonwealth officials, and the broader community.

The Process

A comprehensive briefing process was conducted for all members of the Future Leadership project team, led by senior Future Leadership consultant and Managing Partner, Liz Jones, and the Director General and Head of Service, to identify the nuances of the position and clearly articulate the background and profile of the ideal candidate.

The search process focused on high-calibre candidates with proven and specific experience gained in large tertiary public health services across Australia and New Zealand. Additionally, potential candidates from private health services, government agencies, and professional services firms across Australia and New Zealand, who have recent experience at senior levels in large tertiary public health services, were assessed against the position capabilities. Future Leadership presented a longlist of outstanding, active candidates to the Head of Service, and five candidates progressed to panel interviews.

The Outcome

The successful candidate was appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer and commenced in October 2021.

The appointee is an experienced executive within the public service, bringing established relationships from within not only health services but also the broader public sector, universities, and non-government organisations. The candidate originally joined the regional health service in mid-2019 as Deputy Chief Executive and was fulfilling the role of Interim CEO at the time of their appointment.
