Delivering an Executive Search to appoint a Chief Executive Officer for a community-based health organisation in Victoria

The Brief

Future Leadership was engaged by an independent, not-for-profit community health organisation in metropolitan Victoria to appoint a Chief Executive Officer during a period of significant opportunity and complexity. The organisation operated across community health, disability, aged care and mental health services and was positioned for substantial growth in scope, scale and revenue.

The Board sought a contemporary, values-led Chief Executive Officer capable of leading an integrated, multi-disciplinary organisation, strengthening partnerships, and navigating a rapidly evolving policy and funding environment. The role required strong governance capability, commercial acumen, and the ability to inspire a large workforce while maintaining a strong focus on community impact and service quality.

Future Leadership undertook a comprehensive national executive search tailored to the organisation’s strategic ambitions and operating context.

Key steps included:
Briefing and Strategy Development: A detailed briefing with the Board Chair and Directors to confirm strategic priorities, leadership attributes, growth objectives and risk considerations, including operating within ambiguity arising from sector reform and Royal Commission outcomes.
Targeted Candidate Search: A national and trans-Tasman search supported by targeted advertising and proactive market mapping across community health, broader human services, public sector and adjacent not-for-profit organisations.
Candidate Assessment: Identification and assessment of high-calibre candidates with senior executive capability, entrepreneurial mindset and strong stakeholder engagement skills, including structured interviews and detailed capability evaluation.
Final Evaluation: Presentation of shortlisted candidates to the Selection Committee, with finalists demonstrating strategic vision, governance maturity and the capacity to lead organisational growth and cultural alignment.

The Outcome

The search resulted in the appointment of a highly experienced Chief Executive Officer with a strong track record of leading complex organisations across the not-for-profit, public and private sectors. The appointee brought deep expertise in organisational transformation, governance, risk and compliance, and growth within regulated service environments.

The successful candidate had previously led multiple organisations through periods of significant change, delivering improved financial performance, strengthened stakeholder confidence and enhanced service outcomes. Their experience included scaling organisations within the NDIS and community services landscape, leading cultural uplift, implementing robust governance and risk frameworks, and working closely with Boards to deliver long-term strategy.
Since appointment, the Chief Executive Officer has been well positioned to lead the organisation’s next phase of growth, strengthen partnerships, and advance its purpose of delivering integrated, community-based health and wellbeing services.
