The Brief
A renowned healthcare institution sought to fill the critical role of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide clinical leadership across its medical precinct and shape enterprise service delivery. As a trusted provided, they sought to partner with Future Leadership as the organisation required a highly confidential executive search to be conducted for this pivotal role in the organisation.
The CMO position required a leader who could manage a large team and contribute to the organisation’s strategic vision. With a clear remit to provide leadership and strategic direction to medical staff, research and pathology services across the organisation, the incoming CMO would also be asked to collaborate with the broader organisation to shape enterprise service delivery. The CMO has a critical leadership role in clinical governance and clinical systems innovation, driving excellent and compassionate clinical care, research and education.

The Process
Following an in-depth briefing with the organisation’s CEO and Acting Executive Director of People & Culture, Future Leadership conducted a comprehensive search for high-calibre executives within public and private hospitals across Australia and New Zealand. The search targeted candidates with experience in organisations of a similar size and scale.
The consultant team utilised the Future Leadership Capability Framework to support all facets of the process, from confirming the brief with the client, through interviews and psychometric assessment. Preliminary behavioural based interviews were conducted by the Future Leadership team with questions aligned to the role deliverables and the identified critical capabilities, . Both internal and external candidates were assessed in the process, with shortlisted candidates progressing to panel interviews onsite at the healthcare provider’s facility. Future Leadership fully supported the panel interview process, providing potential interview questions, arranging all logistics, and the lead consultant attending to provide background information and support where required.

Following the successful panel interviews, and completion of 360 degree reference checking, an appointment was confirmed. The successful candidate, who was already acting in a senior medical role within the organisation, was appointed as the Chief Medical Officer bringing gravitas and clinical credibility to the position.
