The Brief

Future Leadership™ was engaged by a leading independent Uniting Church school in New South Wales to appoint a Chief Operating Officer (COO). The school is globally recognised for its innovation, altruism, and commitment to excellence in student and teacher wellbeing.
The COO role was critical to the strategic and operational leadership of the school, reporting directly to the Headmaster and serving as Secretary to the School Council. The position oversaw business services including finance, property, catering, administration, and compliance. The school sought a contemporary leader with broad management experience, strong financial acumen, and the ability to deliver transformational change through collaboration and innovation.

The Process

The Future Leadership team led by Liam King attended an on site briefing with key stakeholders at the School. A comprehensive search strategy was tailored to the School’s strategic needs.
Key steps included:
  • Briefing and Strategy Development: Engaged with the Headmaster, Deputy Chair of the School Council, and Director of People & Culture to define the ideal candidate profile.
  • Targeted Candidate Search: Leveraged extensive networks to identify candidates with proven leadership in educational environments and strong financial management capabilities.
  • Candidate Assessment: Presented a short list of candidates. The panel conducted two rounds of interviews, including a presentation and school tour by final candidates.
  • Final Evaluation: The preferred candidate delivered a presentation introducing themselves to staff and participated in a campus tour to assess cultural alignment.
