Delivering an executive search to appoint a relational, values‑led Junior School leader at a pivotal point in the School’s journey
Brief
Future Leadership™ was engaged by a leading Anglican independent girls’ school in Sydney to appoint a Head of Junior School, a critical leadership role responsible for guiding the educational, pastoral and cultural life of the Junior School and ensuring a strong foundation for learning and wellbeing from the early years.
The appointment occurred at a point of strategic reflection for the School, with a clear desire to strengthen leadership visibility, maintain momentum in academic and wellbeing outcomes, and further embed a cohesive and joyful Junior School experience aligned with the School’s mission, values and whole‑of‑school priorities.
Renowned for its commitment to girls’ education, strong community relationships and a deeply caring culture, the School sought an experienced and contemporary Junior School leader with the capacity to balance operational excellence with warmth, presence and instructional leadership. The role required a leader who understood child development, contemporary primary pedagogy and the importance of nurturing curiosity, creativity and confidence in young learners.
Reporting to the Headmistress and working closely with the Executive Leadership Team, the Head of Junior School was expected to play a key role in contributing to whole‑school strategy while providing day‑to‑day leadership to staff, students and families. The School placed particular importance on the incoming leader’s relational capability, alignment with the Anglican ethos, and ability to build trust across the community.
Future Leadership™ was selected for its extensive experience in appointing senior leaders within independent and faith‑based schools, its understanding of Junior School leadership in girls’ education contexts, and its ability to deliver a rigorous and empathetic search process.
Process
Future Leadership™ undertook a comprehensive and highly consultative executive search process tailored to the School’s context, culture and leadership aspirations.
The engagement commenced with a deep discovery and briefing phase, involving structured conversations with the Headmistress, members of the Executive Leadership Team and key Junior School stakeholders. These discussions explored the current strengths of the Junior School, opportunities for future growth, and the leadership qualities required to sustain excellence while supporting staff and students through ongoing change and development.
Insights from this discovery phase were consolidated into a detailed Search Strategy, clarifying the leadership profile and success factors for the role. Particular emphasis was placed on visible leadership, staff capability building, student wellbeing, community engagement and the ability to translate strategic intent into effective Junior School practice.
A national executive search was conducted, drawing on Future Leadership™’s established networks across independent girls’ schools and primary education settings. The search focused on identifying leaders with strong credentials in Junior School leadership, evidence‑informed practice and relational, values‑based leadership.
Candidates were assessed through a rigorous multi‑stage process, including structured interviews, career and motivation analysis, and values alignment discussions. This ensured shortlisted candidates demonstrated not only the technical expertise required for the role, but also the personal presence, empathy and judgement essential for leading a Junior School community.
Throughout the process, Future Leadership™ worked in close partnership with the School, providing regular updates, market insights and clear advisory support to enable confident decision‑making.
