Executive Search for a Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research & Innovation to Elevate Research Impact to Elevate Research Impact and Strategic Partnerships
The Brief
The University, in its 150th year, sought to appoint a visionary Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) to lead its strategic research agenda and innovation portfolio. The role required a leader who could elevate the University’s research intensity, strengthen transdisciplinary collaboration, and enhance international engagement.
The successful candidate would be expected to model bicultural values aligned with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and contribute to the University’s sustainability and accessibility goals.
The Process
Future Leadership was engaged to deliver a comprehensive executive search, led by Andrew Norton and supported by Anthony Ellis. The search methodology included:
- A detailed stakeholder briefing with the Vice-Chancellor and recruitment partner of the University.
- Development of a candidate prospectus and targeted advertising across platforms including LinkedIn, Seek, and international academic job boards.
- Mapping of talent across New Zealand, Australia, and globally, including universities, research institutes, and private sector organisations.
- Structured interviews aligned to the University’s leadership values: manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and tiakitanga.
- A shortlist of high-calibre candidates was presented, with panel interviews and reference checks coordinated by Future Leadership.
The search was completed within a 10-week timeline.
The Outcome
A competitive international field yeilded a preferred candidate as the Deupty Vice-Cahncellor (Research & Innovation), significantly advanced the University’s research profile.
They led a 48% increase in external research funding, launched the University’s Indigenous Leadership Strategy, and established key partnerships including a networking academy. Their leadership contributed to the university’s highest-ever QS World Ranking and introduced inclusive initiatives such as Indigenous PhD scholarships and a major scholarship program for underrepresented student cohorts.
Their role at the University commenced at the start of 2025.
