Conducting an Executive Search for an Executive Finance Manager to lead financial operations and strategic planning, committed to supporting excellence in patient care and operational efficiency
The Brief
Future Leadership™ was engaged by a leading group of sub-specialist ophthalmologists in Melbourne, to appoint an Executive Finance Manager. This existing senior leadership position became vacant following the departure of a long-serving incumbent after a decade of service.
The Executive Finance Manager was tasked with overseeing all financial operations, including budgeting, reporting, and fiduciary responsibilities, while also advising the CEO and Board. The role required a strategic thinker with CPA qualifications, experience in private health, and proficiency in systems such as Xero. The successful candidate would also manage the Accounts and Payroll Officer and contribute to a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
The organisation sought a flexible, values-driven leader who could work independently and occasionally across its four sites. The appointment was designed to strengthen the organisations financial governance and support its mission of delivering exceptional patient care.
The Process
Future Leadership™ undertook a comprehensive search process tailored to the organisations needs. The assignment commenced with a detailed briefing on 23 April 2024 with one of the panel members, CEO of the organisation, and the Future Leadership team.
Step 1: Briefing and Strategy Development
The team engaged with the organisations leadership to understand the strategic priorities and operational complexities of the role, including the need for flexibility and sector-specific expertise.
Step 2: Targeted Candidate Search
Led by Talent Consultant Sally Trathen, the search focused on Victoria and leveraged Fisher Leadership’s proprietary databases, referral networks, and advertising across Seek, LinkedIn, and the Future Leadership website.
Step 3: Candidate Assessment
Candidates were evaluated against criteria including CPA qualifications, private health experience, and stakeholder engagement capabilities. The organisation was presented with a shortlist and conducted two rounds of interviews.
Step 4: Final Evaluation
Final candidates were assessed for cultural fit, strategic mindset, and ability to lead financial transformation. The organisation selected a preferred candidate who met all criteria and was offered the role.
The Outcome
A highly experienced finance professional with CPA qualifications and a strong background in private health was appointed as Executive Finance Manager in June 2024. The appointee brings expertise in financial systems, stakeholder engagement, and process improvement.
Their leadership is expected to enhance the organisations financial governance, streamline operations, and support the organisation’s strategic goals. The flexible working arrangement aligns with the Organisations progressive approach to workplace culture.
