Date Posted:3 June 2026

Delivering an Executive Search to Strengthen Leadership and System Integration for a NSW Private Hospital Network

The Brief

Future Leadership™ was engaged by a national, for‑purpose healthcare organisation to appoint a Chief Executive Officer for its New South Wales private hospitals portfolio. The role carried enterprise‑wide accountability for clinical services, financial performance and strategic growth across a complex, multi‑site operating environment.

The organisation was navigating increasing regulatory scrutiny, workforce pressures and expectations for high‑quality, patient‑centred care, alongside the need to strengthen commercial performance within a mission‑driven framework. The incoming CEO was required to lead transformation while preserving the organisation’s values, reputation and commitment to ethical healthcare delivery.

Key objectives for the search included identifying an executive with deep experience in hospital operations, a proven ability to lead multidisciplinary clinical environments and the gravitas to engage effectively with boards, clinicians, government stakeholders and partners. Commercial acumen, change leadership capability and alignment to purpose were critical to success.

The Process

Future Leadership™ undertook a comprehensive executive search process tailored to the complexity and sensitivity of the appointment.

Key steps included:

  • Search strategy development
Detailed consultation with senior executives to clarify the mandate for the position, leadership challenges and success measures for the role, and the nuances of the ideal candidate.
  • Targeted Candidate Search
A proactive search combined with targeted market mapping and outreach was conducted across public, private and not-for-profit healthcare organisations to identify senior executives with hospital and system-wide leadership experience. Online advertising was integrated with the search to ensure both visible market engagement and discreet identification of high calibre passive candidates.
  • Candidate Assessment
Candidates were screened against the role requirements including structured behavioural interviews, capability benchmarking and alignment to organisational values
  • Final Evaluation
A shortlist was presented to the selection committee, with candidates participating in panel interviews and final evaluation to support an informed appointment decision. The shortlist report was supplemented with the results of psychometric assessment aligned to identified capabilities for the position.  This enabled informed decision making by the selection panel, assessing leadership style, risk profile and readiness to lead complex healthcare systems.
