Conducting an Executive Search for a Chief Executive Officer to tangibly shape the future in Australia, for a not-for-profit medical organisation

The Brief

A not-for-profit member organisation that provides the next generation of medical professionals with free support, advice and resources. As the voice of the future of the professionals in Australia, it advocates in both the general sector and with the government on issues that matter to trainees.

The Board sought Future Leadership’s support in appointing a new CEO to lead the organisation in its continued representation of trainees and the expansion of its members’ services. The brief was to search for someone who had outstanding stakeholder engagement skills who could interface credibly and effectively with members as well as key government and education bodies. It was imperative that the new CEO had an understanding of medical training and/or the general practice landscape in Australia, and given the changing landscape of training, it was critical they could deal with ambiguity.

The Process

Future Leadership leveraged previous assignments and approached a range of people in the primary health and training sector. The Consultant team, led by Deborah Komesaroff, cast a wide net across Australia and in the course of that sourcing process received referrals of several potential candidates. After reaching out to and persuading excellent prospective candidates to consider the opportunity, the Future Leadership team subsequently managed preferred candidates through a dialogue and decision making process. The selection panel interviewed 3 candidates, 2 of whom were identified through Future Leadership’s sourcing activity.

The Outcome

There was an appointment to the role and they commenced in January 2022. Having recently completed their role as General Manager of a Primary Health Network Alliance, the candidate brings a comprehensive understanding of the primary care delivery. An accomplished CEO and leader, they held a range of senior roles across health, rural health workforce and various colleges in different Australian states and overseas. The successful candidate offers broad experience in education, policy, advocacy and corporate governance, and has worked across a variety of government and not-for-profit organisations with a passion for working with tomorrow’s medical professionals.
