Appointing a courageous, community‑centred Principal to restore confidence and lead lasting change in a leading Catholic School in Sydney.
The Brief
The client is a well‑established Catholic boys’ secondary school in metropolitan New South Wales, educating more than 1,000 students from Years 7 to 12. The College has a proud history, a strong pastoral culture and deep community connections, supported by an active alumni network and a visible sporting profile.
The College’s governing authority engaged Future Leadership™ to support the appointment of a new Principal capable of leading cultural renewal, lifting academic performance and restoring confidence while honouring Catholic identity. The Board sought a visible, values‑driven and financially literate leader with the courage and capability to lead change in a complex, long‑established boys’ school environment.
The Process
The Future Leadership™ team commenced the assignment with a comprehensive briefing with the College’s governing authority, followed by an extensive discovery and stakeholder engagement process designed to deeply understand the lived experience of the school community.
Over two days, Future Leadership™ conducted structured stakeholder consultations with a broad cross‑section of the College, including Board and advisory representatives, the Acting Principal, members of the executive and senior leadership team, teaching and support staff, parents, students, alumni representatives and administrative staff. Using an action research methodology, feedback was triangulated to identify consistent themes, tensions and opportunities across the community.
Stakeholders were asked to reflect on what was working well, the most pressing challenges facing the College, opportunities for future growth, and the qualities required in the next Principal. These insights informed a detailed Search Strategy, which was tested with the Selection Committee and used to guide every stage of the executive search.
The national search leveraged Future Leadership’s proprietary databases, sector networks and targeted research, supported by a confidential advertising campaign. Internal candidates were managed with transparency and procedural fairness, and all applicants were assessed rigorously against the same role criteria and Future Leadership™ Capability Framework.
Shortlisted candidates underwent in‑depth interviews and assessment focused on strategy and purpose, culture and engagement, governance and compliance, organisational capability and change leadership. The process was designed to assess not only technical competence and experience, but leadership presence, values alignment and the capacity to lead healing and renewal within a complex school community.
The Outcome
The search delivered a strong and diverse field of candidates with substantial experience across Catholic and independent school settings. Through disciplined assessment and close collaboration with the Selection Committee, Future Leadership™ supported the appointment of a Principal well positioned to address the College’s immediate challenges and lead long‑term renewal.
The successful appointee demonstrated proven experience in leading cultural and academic improvement, strong financial literacy, credibility in boys’ education and contemporary learning practice, and the confidence to address underperformance while remaining relational, pastoral and highly visible. Their deep understanding of Catholic identity and commitment and closely aligned with the values and aspirations of the College community.
The appointment provided the College with stable, purpose‑driven leadership at a pivotal moment in its history. By grounding the search in robust stakeholder insight and aligning assessment to future‑focused leadership capabilities, Future Leadership™ enabled the school to move forward with clarity, confidence and a renewed sense of direction.
