Leading and manage Council’s infrastructure and amenity services to achieve Council’s goals
The Brief
Future Leadership™ was engaged by a local Council in 2023 to appoint a new Director, Infrastructure and City Services, given the forthcoming departure of a long serving incumbent. The role will report to the CEO and is part of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT). A strong candidate was needed to have an understanding of local government and, due to the need to liaise closely with Councillors, to be politically astute and mindful. An engineering qualification was not mandatory however the ideal person needed to possess a strong understanding of contract management and driving value for money. A desire for the council to modernise is likely to trigger changes to the organisational structure. Being cognisant of these changes, was a requirement as being part of the ELT.
The Process
Future Leadership™ undertook a comprehensive search process, led by Partner and Public sector Lead, David Baber. The search process was tailored to the organisation’s needs, which included identifying candidates who were collaborative with strong stakeholder management skills, possessed sound, contemporary leadership with an understanding of the relevant unions and staff cohort, with a strong and strategic approach to infrastructure development aligned to community needs. An understanding of Local Council and its governance arrangements (including legislation) will be valued. Candidates from other backgrounds will also be considered.
The Outcome
A strong shortlist of nine candidates across Local Government, was presented and after a highly competitive process, the candidate appointed brings extensive experience in youth, community services, infrastructure, and major projects, and understands the vital role Council plays in responding to the unique needs of the local community. Having previously worked within five local government councils including holding a CEO position.
