Date Posted:22 September 2025

Future Leadership™ was entrusted with leading the national search for a new Head of Preparatory School at a prestigious Sydney boys’ boarding school. Recognising the need for visionary leadership to guide its Preparatory School into the future, the school sought a leader who could honour its rich heritage while driving continued growth and transformation.

The Brief

Future Leadership™ was engaged to conduct a national executive search for this pivotal role. The assignment commenced with a comprehensive briefing involving senior school leaders and the Future Leadership™ team. The process included one-on-one meetings with key stakeholders across the school, including executive leaders, heads of departments, and directors of learning and wellbeing.

The discovery phase captured a wide range of perspectives on the strengths, challenges, and aspirations for this prestigious Sydney boys’ boarding school. The school is recognised as a thriving, future-focused environment that balances academic excellence, innovation, and community connection. Personalised, data-informed learning supports individual growth, while an empowered leadership team promotes inquiry and critical thinking. The house system, co-curricular programs, and modern facilities further enhance student development and wellbeing. While evolving demographics and a multi-campus structure present challenges, they also offer opportunities for innovation and improved cohesion. Feedback highlighted the need for stronger alignment between preparatory and secondary schools, enhanced leadership structures, and continued focus on student transitions and digital readiness. Opportunities for growth include expanding co-curricular offerings, deepening technology integration, and strengthening executive unity. The ideal Head of Preparatory School will be a relational, forward-thinking leader—collaborative, emotionally intelligent, academically strong, and capable of inspiring innovation while honouring the school’s rich traditions.

The Process

The appointment process began with a comprehensive briefing session involving senior leaders and the Future Leadership™ team, where the requirements and expectations for the Head of Preparatory School role were clarified. This was followed by a series of one-on-one meetings with key stakeholders across the school, including executive leaders, department heads, and directors, to gather a wide range of perspectives on the school’s strengths, challenges, and future needs. Stakeholder feedback was then analysed using an action research methodology to identify common themes and inform the search strategy.

A tailored search strategy was developed, targeting high-calibre candidates both nationally and internationally, and leveraging internal and external networks. The role was advertised across multiple platforms, and targeted outreach was conducted to attract a diverse pool of candidates. Both internal and external applicants were assessed against rigorous selection criteria, with shortlisted candidates progressing through multiple interview rounds. The process concluded with the selection committee conducting final interviews and reference checks, ultimately leading to the appointment of an exceptional leader with extensive experience to guide the school into its next chapter.

The Outcome

The executive search process, guided by the Future Leadership™ Capability Framework, culminated in the appointment of an exceptional Head of Preparatory School. The successful candidate brings a wealth of experience in educational leadership, a proven track record of driving innovation, and a deep commitment to student and staff wellbeing.
