Appointing a Principal to Lead Excellence at a Leading Grammar Primary School in Melbourne

Date Posted:22 September 2025

A leading inner-city independent coeducational school engaged Future Leadership™ to conduct a national executive search for its next Principal. With a tradition of outstanding education for children aged 3 to 12, the school sought a visionary leader to guide its community into the future. Future Leadership™ brought deep expertise in executive recruitment, applying a proven methodology to uncover and attract exceptional educational leaders who would honour the school’s values while driving continued growth and transformation.

The Brief

Future Leadership™ was engaged to lead this executive search for a new Principal at a leading Grammar Primary School in Melbourne. The process commenced with a comprehensive briefing involving the school’s Board, senior leadership team, and the Future Leadership™ team. This included a tour of the school and grounds with student leaders, as well as one-on-one meetings with key stakeholders. These consultations were designed to capture a wide range of perspectives on the strengths, challenges, and aspirations for the school.

The school is recognised for its inclusive, nurturing environment, where diversity is celebrated and relationships with children, families, and staff are cherished. The staff is multi-generational, with many long-serving members, and the school community is described as authentic, connected, and relational. Recent changes, particularly in information technologies, have been successfully embedded, but some staff members are experiencing change fatigue and require a Principal who can continue to embed these changes thoughtfully.

The curriculum is rigorous and enjoyable, with small class sizes and specialist teachers in the arts, music, languages, and physical education. The school maintains high expectations and supportive relationships, encouraging children to develop character and aspire to be their best. The ideal Principal will have a strong presence in the school community, possess personal qualities of reflection and efficiency, and be committed to fostering a culture grounded in love and faith.

The Process

Future Leadership™ approached the executive search with a commitment to understanding the unique culture and needs of the school. The process began with a detailed briefing and stakeholder engagement to identify the qualities and leadership style required for the next Principal. The search strategy targeted high-calibre candidates nationally (Australia and New Zealand), leveraging both internal and external networks. The role was advertised across multiple platforms, including print and online media, to attract a diverse pool of candidates.

Applicants were assessed against rigorous selection criteria, with shortlisted candidates progressing through multiple interview rounds. The selection process included panel interviews focused on strategic leadership, educational expertise, culture, capability, and stakeholder relationships. Final stage interviews and referencing ensured the best fit for the school’s vision and values.

The Outcome

The executive search process, guided by the Future Leadership™ Capability Framework, culminated in the appointment of an exceptional Principal. The successful candidate brings a wealth of experience in educational leadership, a proven track record of driving innovation, and a deep commitment to student and staff wellbeing. Their visionary approach, collaborative spirit, and strategic insight position them to lead the school confidently into its next chapter, ensuring continued excellence and fostering a culture of growth and innovation for years to come.
